The winter weather has hit us hard this week! When temperatures are dangerously low, we stay indoors for body break and recess. Otherwise, we are outside and playing in the snow! In order to play in the snow, students need to be wearing snow pants, snow boots, gloves, coats, etc. We want to avoid having students sitting in cold, wet clothes for the rest of the day.
We have been using many “Super Reader” powers in class to help us get through tricky parts in books. We learned how to identify patterns in text. We then learned strategies to use when that pattern was interrupted! We use picture power and pointer power to helps us figure out new words.
The students are learning to solve new words by making connections to the ways words sound. We’ve been saying words slowly, and the students are listening for the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words. They’re learning to write the letters for each of the sounds they hear.

We are writing some very persuasive books in Writing Workshop! We’re learning to use our writing as a tool to make a change! We write about our opinions, and provide reasoning and examples to help persuade the reader!
In Math, we have been working with identifying numbers and quantities up to 20! We then began composing and decomposing numbers up to 5. We’ve been solving problems (e.g. part-whole) using 5 cubes or counters!
We have brand new chair pockets in 003! We use these pockets to store folders and books. They keep all of our things together and organized, minimize transition times, and free up space in our classroom. Thanks to some generous donors, we have a chair pocket on each student’s chair! Thank you so much for all you do to help make our days even better! The students love the pockets, and rumor has it - they make the chairs more comfortable!
